If you're one of those people who keeps up with audio technology, you've noticed a phenomena increasingly common at audiophile community websites: almost unbelievably low-cost IEMs (in ear monitors) are being discovered that approach the quality of high-end headphones. Imports from China and Germany, some costing $15-$40, are getting raved about. Reviews with titles like "Are you kidding me?!" discuss $30 IEMs shipped from Germany(though not manufactured there), mentioning them in the same sentence as items costing $200-$400; if not equal, scarily close for the price.

Maybe it's the high end manufacturers that pioneered the technology that made this possible; so be it. But the fact is becoming increasingly clear that high quality, audiophile class headphones need not be at boutique prices. The ultra-high end market still has superiority, but almost zero justification for the price difference, and the divide is narrowing. Guess what? Your $300 IE8's and Triple-Fi's are not 6x superior to many $50 'phones. You got fleeced by a boutique item that caters to people with more money than sense, or audiophile elitists who see high prices as validation for the exclusivity of their hobby. The technology just does not cost that much to produce.

At this point many of the "cheap but excellent" phones come at a compromise in build quality and need to be purchased from overseas, but not for long. Small upstarts like Meelec are turning the market on its head with items like the M9 and M6, and I have a feeling they aren't going to stop there. If these headphones are judged penny for penny, Meelec is about $30 away from producing elite-status gear on par with the best of the best.

Let's hope that Meelec doesn't give in to the temptation of $150 headphones with marginal improvements catered to deep pockets, but instead continues to be proponents of this new shift towards realistically priced quality. They are well advised to do so, because whether they know it or not, there's others who are, and it's only a matter of time until competition starts nipping at their heels.
